Body of Text
Kelly Wellman
Body of Text, 2000
Printed Letterpress, Photographs
At first glance, Body of Text resembles an ordinary book. Upon opening its cover, the reader finds that its form is a series of photographs and translucent paper folded upon each other. The pages and photographs tell a narrative of a convoluted relationship. The content deals with themes of manipulation, desire, abandonment, intimacy, ownership, self-determination and loss. This book uniquely and remarkably blurs the lines between a love affair with a past lover or with text and the printing press itself. The artist uses artistic media to discuss themes of gender and sex within the context of relationships.
